JOB TITLE: Principal Engineer - Process

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review Invitation to Bid (ITB) documents submitted during the proposal stage, delegate tasks, raise technical queries, manage inputs from other disciplines, review techno-commercial vendor offers, and prepare proposal technical write-ups and man-hour estimates.
  • Supervise the verification of design integrity and use process simulation software such as HYSYS and PIPESIM to ensure project specifications in the FEED packages are feasible. Interpret and evaluate reports generated by process engineering software.
  • Evaluate and compare FEED package documents and data sheets through scope-of-supply analysis and heat-and-mass balance calculations. Identify discrepancies and inconsistencies, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Verify and conceptualize the most optimal work route. Define a clear scope of work/supply and plan/schedule engineering activities and manpower resources accordingly.
  • Identify and quantify the total number of engineering deliverables, allocate man-hours, determine the format of delivery, set time schedules, and outline requirements for task execution.
  • Coordinate with project and planning teams on schedules, establish target completion dates, and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Lead the preparation of the Technical Document Register (TDR) for process activities. Conduct contract reviews and ensure the correctness of all key process deliverables. Resolve discrepancies and divergences from the original proposal by raising technical queries or arranging meetings with projects/clients.
  • Recommend and assign manpower for engineering activities within budgeted project man-hours. Propose cost-effective measures to minimize overall manpower costs.
  • Supervise the preparation of Start-Up and Operations Manuals and Operational Test Procedures (OTPs) as needed. Provide commissioning support as required.
  • Oversee system engineering activities, including finalizing P&ID diagrams, performing equipment sizing/rating calculations, and selecting suitable materials of construction per process/service requirements.
  • Interface with and provide clarification, guidance, and technical support to construction sites and commissioning engineers. Offer start-up assistance as required.
  • Supervise the preparation of design and equipment calculations for determining and verifying equipment parameters such as valve sizes, pumps, vessels, exchangers, columns, safety valves, control valves, shutdown valves, line sizing, and logic diagrams.
  • Lead the preparation of equipment lists for downstream engineering disciplines, ensuring equipment compatibility and conformance with client specifications. Recommend cost-effective measures to reduce project costs while maintaining technical and safety compliance.
  • Interface with client and vendor representatives, conduct internal staff meetings, and ensure project progress aligns with schedules, allotted man-hours, and budgeted costs. Coordinate with project and planning departments on schedule-related issues and update TDR progress using PETROCEPT software.
  • Perform and supervise all safety-related process calculations, including blow-down/depressurizing and safety relief. Participate in design reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, and model reviews, ensuring closeout of HAZOP actions in process documents.
  • Interact with Quality Assurance to address quality issues and ensure compliance with the company’s ISO quality procedures. Coordinate internal and client audit requests and facilitate audits of engineering systems within the department.
  • Provide performance/utility guarantees and prepare guarantee test procedures.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations, establish performance criteria, identify strengths and weaknesses, and recommend training and development needs.
  • Identify training and development needs for the team and assist in establishing career paths.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Direct Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical/process engineering or a related field; master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in process engineering, including FEED, EPC projects, and proposal preparation.
  • Proficiency in process simulation software such as HYSYS and PIPESIM, along with knowledge of heat and mass balance calculations, equipment sizing, and safety process design.
  • Strong ability to plan, schedule, and allocate resources effectively while ensuring compliance with project timelines and budgets.
  • Excellent communication, team leadership, and coordination skills to liaise with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
