JOB TITLE: Principal Inspector – Quality (Welding & Structural)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Welding:

  • Monitoring and reporting on the fabrication, installation, erection, and testing processes of process piping, steel structures, tanks, vessels, and metallic items.
  • Review of WPS, PQR, and weld maps.
  • Witness welder qualifications.
  • Ensure that material/welding consumables are stored and handled correctly, maintaining material traceability and using the correct materials when required.
  • Ensure a system of welding consumable control is implemented.
  • Ensure welding machines, baking ovens, and quivers are in serviceable condition and, where required, within the valid calibration period.
  • Conduct timely inspections during the fabrication and construction of structures.
  • Check the qualifications of the welding personnel and the types of materials being used in the process.
  • Perform visual, dimensional, and NDE checks.
  • Monitor welding process parameters for compliance with approved procedures and project specifications.
  • Perform in-process (before, during, and after) and final visual inspections.
  • Prepare/review inspection reports (fit-up, final visual).
  • Monitor the performance of contractors, ensuring personnel are qualified and competent to perform allocated tasks and have valid certification for the welding techniques in use, where required.
  • Review test reports, including PWHT charts/records, for process output compliance with requirements.
  • Prepare/review daily welding and NDE reports.

Painting/Coating:

  • Ensure weather conditions are acceptable in line with applicable standards/specifications (environmental, time, and economic constraints).
  • Ensure manufacturer’s instructions and MSDS are followed while handling and storing painting/coating materials and abrasives at the site.
  • Ensure that data sheets are available, material traceability is maintained, and the correct materials are used.
  • Monitor the performance of contractors, ensuring applicators are competent and have valid certification for the processes in use; equipment must be in serviceable condition.
  • Ensure inspection and test equipment is serviceable, within the calibration period, and that personnel are knowledgeable in its use.
  • Ensure the weld area is covered before blasting, where pressure testing is not completed.
  • Ensure the protection of flange serration, instruments, etc., before blasting.
  • Ensure surface preparation, blast profile, and cleanliness meet requirements.
  • Continuously monitor surface cleanliness and record surface profiles.
  • Monitor wet film thickness during application and application techniques.
  • Monitor dry film thickness and recoating intervals.
  • Ensure any identification marks or tags that are removed or over-coated are replaced.
  • After the full curing activity, conduct visual inspections and specified non-destructive and/or destructive tests.
  • Check for any damages and defects upon completion of each stage of painting/coating works.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • CSWP 3.1/3.2 or AWS SCWI certified Welding Inspector; NACE Level II Coating Inspector.
  • ISO 9712 NDE Level II Certification in RT, UT, MT, and PT preferred.
  • Experience as a QC Inspector in welding, structural, and coating.
  • Experience in the oil and gas/petrochemical industry is required.
  • Experience in wind energy platform fabrication inspection activities is preferred.
  • Multi-discipline inspector preferred (welding inspection, NDT inspection, coating inspection).
